Driver taken to hospital after serious lorry crash on M4's Prince of Wales bridge

A car driver has been taken to hospital after a crash with a lorry on the M4 this morning.

Two lanes were closed on the M4 westbound from just before where the old toll booths used to be, heading into Wales. The crash was first reported just before 4am and there were delays of more than half an hour at its peak.

One person had to be freed from a vehicle as a result of the crash, according to the fire service.

The driver of the car, a Toyota Yaris, has been taken to Southmead Hospital following the crash. Gwent Police said the injuries of the driver were not life-changing or life-threatening.

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 4.08am today to a road traffic collision on the M4.

"We sent a Hazardous Area Response Team and a double-crewed land ambulance, and conveyed one patient by ambulance to Southmead Hospital.”

A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "At approximately 3.51am, we received reports of a road traffic collision Westbound on the M4 between Junction 23 Rogiet and Junction 23A Magor.

"Crews from Caldicot and Malpas Stations attended the scene and used specialist equipment extricate one person and make the area safe.

"A stop message was received at approximately 6:48am."

Gwent Police said it was called to the two-vehicle crash involving a Toyota Yaris and a lorry at 3.50am.

It said: " The driver of the Yaris was taken to hospital for treatment, but the injuries are not believed to be life changing/life threatening.

"Recovery was arranged for vehicles and road reopened at 8am."

The Welsh Ambulance Service was also called to the collision.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called at approximately 03:53 to reports of a road traffic collision on the westbound M4 carriageway between J23 and J22 near Chepstow.

"We sent one ambulance to the incident where colleagues in South West Ambulance Service took over the scene.”
