Driver taken to hospital after early morning smash at East Kilbride bus stop

A man has been taken to hospital after an early morning crash in East Kilbride.

Witnesses said a driver came off the road and "crashed into a bus stop" in Westwood just before 6.30am.

The road was blocked with emergency services including the fire service and police on the scene.

One local posted on social media: "Oh that’s terrible, I hope no one is too badly injured."

Another person then responded: "He’s okay, just a small scratch to the eye tyre completely blew up on him."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of a crash involving one car on Belmont Drive, East Kilbride, around 6.20am on Wednesday, November 9.

“The male driver was taken to Hairmyres Hospital for treatment and recovery was arranged.”

It is also understood that the car hit a lamp post.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 6.27am on Wednesday, November 9 to reports of a one-vehicle road traffic collision.

“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances to the scene. One casualty was passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“Fire crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”

Head of roads and transportation services at South Lanarkshire Council , Colin Park, said: “We attended the location after a road traffic accident, following a request from the Police. We cleared debris, made the area safe and follow-up repairs are being programmed.”
