Driver stopped in middle of M56 to check his phone for directions

A driver spotted by police at a standstill on the M56 was using their phone to search for directions.

North West Motorway Police say the the light blue Kia Picanto stopped on the M56 near junction 3 for Altrincham and Wythenshawe on Saturday afternoon.

The car had parked up on a 'tigers tail' - chevron markings that guide traffic when a motorway splits.

The driver told officers they had stopped on the tigers tail to use navigation on their phone.

A picture posted by North West Motorway Police showed the vehicle stopped below gantry signs advising which direction to follow.

The driver of the vehicle was issued a Traffic Offence Report (TOR), which is issued when an officer has reason to believe someone has committed a specified road traffic-related offence.

The caption accompanying the image read: "Driver stopped on tigers tail to use navigation on phone - not reading motorway gantry signs above her - TOR issued."

The incident took place on the same day that changes to the Highway Code came into affect.

From January 29, new guidance was issued on a range of motoring codes. How motorist open the the door of a vehicle was one of these key changes.

The Dutch reach technique is now advised, which asks drivers, where able to do so, to open the door using their hand on the opposite side to the door they are opening.

Another change that took place concerned who has priority at junctions, with the Highways Code now specifying that traffic should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross at a junction.
