A motorcyclist wearing only a tee-shirt and shorts was arrested just over an hour outside of Dublin on Wednesday.
The biker was pulled over by Gardai in Cavan because of their choice of clothing, however a number of other problems were soon discovered. The motorcyclist documentation was not in order and they also failed a drug test.
The motorist had no rear brakes, no insurance and tested positive for both cocaine and cannabis.

A garda spokesperson said: "Cavan Road Policing Unit were on the R188 (Cootehill Road) yesterday when they stopped a motorcyclist wearing only a tee shirt and shorts. The driver had no insurance, no rear brakes and then failed the roadside drugs test and tested positive for both cocaine and cannabis. Needless to say this motorcyclist was arrested and the motorcycle was taken off the road."
The rules of the road state that motorcyclist must wear appropriate clothing and a secure helmet when on their motorbike.
Protective clothing rules are as follows:
- Jackets and trousers should give you enough protection from impact, abrasion, cold and weather conditions.
- Use body armour on exposed areas such as the back, knees, elbows, shoulders, hips and shins. This should be adjustable so it fits snugly and does not move in a crash.
- You should wear a good reflective jacket, to make you more visible on the road.
- Wear protective gloves, and footwear that comes above the ankle at least.
It is a fixed charge offence of €80 to use a motorcycle without wearing a helmet or to permit a passenger to ride on a motorcycle without wearing a helmet.
