Driver smashes into railings outside landmark pub

A motorist smashed into railings at an accident blackspot outside a landmark pub. The driver was unhurt following the smash outside the Black Friar pub in Salford on Monday night.

Pictures from the scene showed firefighters at the junction of Blackfriars Road and Trinity Way which has seen at least 20 crashes in the last five years, two of them fatal.

In the latest incident, two cars were involved and one ended up badly damaged against a railing outside the pub. The council has tweaked the sequencing of the traffic lights at the junction to prevent traffic turning off Trinity Way coming into conflict with cars coming from the opposite direction. But the problem persists.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 9.30pm on Monday 20 February, firefighters were called out to a road traffic collision on Black Friars Road, Salford.

"A fire engine from Manchester Central Fire Station attended the scene where two cars had collided. No one was reported as injured and the crew was detained for five minutes while they made the scene safe, before handing the incident to over to Greater Manchester Police."

In January, the M.EN. reported how there was a crash at the junction 'every week'.

The crossroads has seen 20 crashes from the start of 2017 to mid-2022. Of those, two were fatal, and six were classed as ‘serious’ by police.

The other 12 recorded by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were seen as ‘slight’ - but this is not believed to be the true number of incidents that have taken place there as some were not reported to police.

Th council says improvements have been made to the junction to prevent tragedies happening again.

The pub - which reopened in 2021 after years of closure - has borne the brunt of the impacts. Its owner, Neil Burke, has said the situation reached a new low in December.

He said: "I would say it’s every two or three weeks. Over the Christmas period it was insane, I think we had three or four ambulances out. It’s just constant. It just seems strange that they have not done more about it.”

Coun Mike McCusker, Salford Council's lead member for planning and sustainable neighbourhoods, has previously said in a statement: "One collision is one too many at any location. Following the incidents here we are working with Transport for Greater Manchester and Greater Manchester Police to investigate the circumstances and see if there is anything that can be done to reduce the risk in future.

"In this case several collisions have happened with traffic turning right from Trinity Way into Blackfriars Road coming into conflict with traffic going straight ahead on Trinity Way. The traffic signals have been amended to make it clearer to drivers turning right when it is safe to do so while we consider any further, longer-term measures.”
