Driver's miraculous escape after car smashes through wall and hangs over 10ft drop

A driver made a miraculous escape after her car was left hanging precariously over a 10ft drop.

Fire crews worked to stabilise the vehicle which had stopped at close to a right angle after crashing through a wall, with its front end in a hedge.

Paramedics and police were also at the scene on Thursday afternoon in Bishops Rise, off Ilsham Valley in Devon, reports DevonLive.

The driver, an 88-year-old woman, was safely rescued from inside the blue Mercedes.

She was assessed by paramedics.

A car door had to be removed to help the pensioner out.

Photos from the scene - taken at around 2.30pm - show pieces of the garage wall having landed on a garden shed's roof below.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the car had driven through the side of a garage within a residential property.

Crews from Paignton and Torquay attended the incident.

Firefighters used a variety of tools, including a triple extension ladder, as well as a winch and strops.

Green Watch crew manager Josh Caunter, from Torquay fire station, said the driver was in the vehicle when they arrived.

He said: “We safely extricated her from the vehicle by removing the driver's door and assisting her down a ladder."

He added: "We have made the vehicle safe and sectioned off the car port."

A neighbour has said the woman at the address of the incident has lived there for about 40 years.

She said: "She is very independent. She's lived there for about 40 years and she's always up and down to the shops."

The fire service said in a statement: "Crews from Paignton and Torquay attended a car accident where a car had driven through the side of a garage of a domestic property and the front end of the car had fallen down a ten foot drop.

"Crews stabilised the vehicle using v-struts, a tirfor winch and strops, chocks, a triple extension ladder, and small tools, then managed to extricate the driver of the vehicle.

"The driver was handed over to paramedics on scene who could assess for any injuries."

The Mirror has contacted Devon and Cornwall Police and South Western Ambulance Service for more information.
