They were both confined to their vehicles for medical reasons while fire crews provided first aid and prepared the vehicles to safely remove them.
Fire crews used a longboard to free the driver of the VW Polo, who was found to be uninjured.

A fire service spokesperson said: "The occupant of the second vehicle remained in the vehicle until assessments were carried out on both people by North West Ambulance Service (NWAS). Fire crews then assisted NWAS in helping the remaining occupant onto a stretcher before both casualties were taken to hospital by NWAS for further checks.
"Crews left the scene after handing over to Merseyside Police at 11.13am."
Merseyside Police said one person was taken to hospital as a precaution. Photos showed a recovery van flipping the VW Polo back upright before taking both cars away from the scene.
