A woman has been airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries after crashing a suspected stolen luxury car on the South Eastern Freeway this morning.
Emergency services were called to Monarto South at about 7.15am after reports a car had left the freeway and crashed into a tree.
The impact of the crash was so severe the engine was ripped from the red Mercedes Benz and landed some distance away.
The driver, a 29-year-old woman from Murray Bridge, was airlifted to the Flinders Medical Centre with serious injuries.
South Australia Police suspect the sedan was stolen from a home in Murray Bridge in the early hours on the morning but investigations are ongoing.
Traffic is down to one lane for motorists heading to the city.
Restrictions are expected to remain in place while major crash investigators examine the scene and motorists are advised to take an alternative route if possible.
Police are asking for anyone who witnessed the crash, saw the red Mercedes Benz travelling prior to the crash or has dashcam footage that may assist the investigation is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
