A driver has been arrested, charged and had their car impounded after giving gardai a false name when pulled over recently.
The Naas Roads Policing Unit was on patrol on the Dublin Road in Clane recently when a van was pulled over on the R403.
Gardai asked the person’s identity, and after initially giving officers a fake name, it was quickly discovered that they were actually a disqualified driver.

They were operating the vehicle without insurance or a driving licence and so officers opted to arrest him.
He was later charged for the law break and his van was impounded.
A garda spokesperson confirmed: “Naas RPU on patrol stopped this van on the R403 Dublin Road, Clane recently.
“Driver initially gave false name and was discovered to be a disqualified driver with no insurance or driving licence.
“Van impounded, driver arrested and charged. Court to follow.”
In Ireland, if you drive while uninsured, you could be fined up to €5000 and get 5 penalty points. You could also go to prison for up to 6 months.
The judge may decide to disqualify you from driving instead of giving you penalty points.
It is also an offence to drive without a licence. A Garda can ask you to produce your driving licence for inspection.
If you do not have your driving licence with you, you must bring it to a Garda station for inspection within 10 days. If you refuse to give the Garda your name and address, the Garda has the power to arrest you.
If you don’t have a current licence, and your driving licence expired less than 12 months before the offence took place, you could be fined up to €1000.
If it was more than 12 months since your licence was valid (or if you never had a valid licence), you could be fined up to €2000.
If you drive while disqualified from driving, or you are required to produce a certificate of competency or certificate of fitness before getting a driving licence but you fail to do so, you could be fined up to €5000, or be imprisoned for up to 6 months, or both.
