Driver flees on foot after crash with Delta taxi leaves teen, 18, in hospital

A driver who was involved in a crash with a Delta taxi which injured a teenager, is being sought by police after fleeing the scene.

Police and paramedics were called to Breck Road in Everton at around 9am following a crash between a private hire taxi and a car.

Dramatic images from an ECHO reader show the crumpled front end of a Delta taxi and a badly damaged side of black Jaguar X-Type car.

The road had to be closed between Heyworth Street and Breckfield Road South to allow recovery of the vehicles to be arranged.

An 18-year-old girl was taken to hospital after the crash and is understood to have suspected whiplash.

Merseyside Police has now confirmed the driver of the black Jaguar X-Type car fled the scene on foot, abandoning his car, and enquiries to locate him are ongoing.

The dad, of the teenager, told the ECHO : "She had only been in the taxi about three minutes before the crash happened.

"She was on her way to dentist."

"But the taxi couldn't have avoided the crash, the driver cut across the road and just went into the side of them."

The dad said thankfully his daughter, who lives in Liverpool, was not seriously injured however is in hospital with suspected whiplash.

He added: "Thankfully she has had scans and there is no broken bones, but she has suspected whiplash and her legs are sore.

"She will probably be very sore tomorrow.

"She is ok in herself but she is just a bit shocked by it all."

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said the driver of the Jaguar is described as an Eastern European man wearing a leather jacket and dark jeans.

He is believed to have made off on foot in the direction of Richmond Terrace.

The crash, which was yards from a bus stop, affected public transport.

Arriva North West tweeted to warn its customers that Service 14 will be using Queens Road in both directions during the closure.

And Stagecoach said all 14 and 189 buses on the way into the city were being diverted via Queens Road and West Derby Road while journeys out of the city will use Heyworth Street, St Domingo, Mere Lane "and then pick up the route".

Enquiries are ongoing and anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any information, dashcam or CCTV footage, is asked to contact @MerPolCC, 101 quoting ref. 20000020678 or @CrimestoppersUK anonymously on 0800 555 111.
