There was no trace of the motorist when officers searched the area. A North West Ambulance Service spokesman said an ambulance attended but there were no patients to treat.

When the ECHO visited the scene, a large gap in the wall was strewn with collapsed sandstone and car crash debris, marking the spot where the impact occurred. A picture published on social media showed the overturned car with a crumpled bonnet and lying at an angle across the carriageway nearly perpendicular to the direction of the road.

The wall is the perimeter of the Grade II listed Seneshchal’s House, built in 1598, and lies within a 20mph zone and conservation area. Witnesses are being sought.
