Driver filmed 'speeding at 82mph in 20mph zone' in Edinburgh sparks police probe

POLICE are probing a video on social media which appears to show a driver going at speeds of up to 82mph “in a 20mph zone” in Edinburgh.

The video showed a Honda Civic swerving in between parked and driving cars, accelerating to dangerous speeds and often crossing onto the wrong side of the road.

It was filmed on Saughton Road North in the Carrick Knowe area of west Edinburgh, EdinburghLive reported last week.

That was confirmed by police officers, who on Tuesday said they were “appealing for information and witnesses following an incident of dangerous driving in the Saughton Road North area”. The road has sections which are limited to 20mph.

The video was shared on Instagram by the account “Hoodstigs”, which shares clips of dangerous driving and car crashes. It is unclear if this was the original source of the upload.

Police said they have established that the video was first uploaded online on Monday, 6 January, 2025.

The video has been deleted from the Hoodstigs page, but is still circulating on social media elsewhere.

Constable Alexander Marshall, from the Edinburgh Road Policing Unit, said: “This was an extremely irresponsible and reckless act, not only to be speeding at over 80mph in a 20mph zone, but to also use a mobile phone filming yourself while doing so.

“Putting the public at risk in such a manner will not be tolerated.

“We are asking for anyone who may have witnessed the Honda Civic in question, or can help identify the driver, to please contact police on 101, quoting incident 0555 of 14 January, 2025.

“Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, if you wish to remain anonymous.”
