Driver charged after fatal crash with coal train

A man has been charged three months after a fatal collision between a four-wheel drive and a coal train in north Queensland.

Police say the LandCruiser's passenger - a 50-year-old Townsville man - died at the scene after the crash that occurred after 9pm at Bowen on July 11.

The 4WD driver - a 40-year-old Townsville man - suffered serious injuries and was transported to Bowen hospital before being airlifted to Mackay for treatment.

The train's two drivers were not injured.

Police on Wednesday said they have charged the 40-year-old 4WD driver with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death.

He is set to appear in Townsville Magistrates Court on November 10.
