Drimnagh family overjoyed after being crowned Dublin Zoo's 60 millionth visitor

A Drimnagh family was overjoyed after they were crowned Dublin Zoo's 60 millionth visitor.

When Sandra Manzor, Darren O’Connor, and six-month-old baby Mason O’Connor walked through the gates on Tuesday the last thing they expected was to be greeted with a bouquet of flowers and an annual pass by the zoo director himself.

Director Dr Christoph Schwitzer said it was a "privilege" to welcome their 60 millionth visitor to the world-renowned tourist attraction.

Dublin Zoo opened over 200 years ago in September 1831 to members of the Zoological Society of Ireland and visitors who could afford the sixpence entrance fee.

Since then it has transformed into one of Ireland’s largest and most popular attractions with the opening of animal habitats including the brand new Himalayan Hills which is home to the snow leopard and red pandas.

It’s a place where generations of Irish families and friends have flocked together to create magical memories and learn about the incredible endangered species living there.

Dr Schwitzer added: "To remain as popular as ever is a testament to the dedicated efforts of generations of Dublin Zoo staff to continually improve both animal welfare standards and the visitor experience.

"We’re proud of Dublin Zoo’s position as one of Ireland’s most loved family visitor attractions and a provider of a world-class standard of animal care."
