Drew's own comic books making their mark at Perth's first Com Con event

A young comic book creator is looking forward to getting his table up at Perth ’s first ever conference devoted to comics.

Perth Comic Con is pencilled in the diary for August 6 from 10am-4pm at Dewars Centre on Glover Street.

And among those attending is Drew Marr, a 14-year-old from Dundee who has been scribbling and imagining since he was just eight and launched his work aged nine.

He self-published his stories and is the founder of Gold Lion Comics.

“My first comic book series is called The Rehabilitation of Doctor Eye. This is a 10-part series based on the life of a supervillain and how he changes to become a force for good,” explained Drew.

“My second creation is Drunk Genie. He is an immoral and incompetent genie who constantly fails to grant people’s wishes properly.”

Drew has contributed comic strips to the critically acclaimed publication The Big Comic Scene Annual and The 77, a brand new retro-style anthology.

All this has meant the Tayside teen has grown in confidence and enthusiasm as each year has passed.

Because he is eager to work with other young people who wish to sell their creations, at Perth Comic Con Drew will have his process folder to show others how to create comics.

“I have been to several comic cons over the years, including the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, and I could not be prouder to be part of Perth ’s first ever comic con organised by the BGCP (Big Glasgow Comic Page),” he told the PA. “I really hope meeting young artists and showing them the creative process will encourage them to take their drawing to another level.”

Drew’s mum Kelly said: “Drew is really keen to empower other kids - and their parents. I was a bit scared of digital technology at first. But Drew can help explain how comic books have wings through digital platforms and can help others understand how best to get their ideas seen.”

BGCP Comic Con is making its first Perth appearance. The brand was started for comic fans as The Big Glasgow Comic Page back in July 2012. Next came a popular Facebook page and eventually this led to a comic book group, pub quizzes, tournaments and eventually a Comic Book Market in Glasgow.

BGCP started to run Comic Cons out of Glasgow too, including at East Kilbride, Rutherglen, Loch Lomond, Dunoon and Aberdeen.

Anyone wanting to be part of the BGCP community can join on Discord, Twitter and Instagram.
