Drew Barrymore responds to Hugh Grant branding her singing ‘horrendous’ in Music & Lyrics

Drew Barrymore had a surprisingly sweet response to Hugh Grant’s criticism of her singing voice in their 2007 film Music & Lyrics.

Earlier this week, the 62-year-old described the American actress’s voice “just horrendous” while promoting his new film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

In response to his comments, Barrymore took to Instagram on Thursday to perform some of the film’s song.

Stood in the dressing room of her talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show, the 48-year-old sang a few verses of the song into a hair brush, before looking into the camera and addressing her former co-star.

She said with a smile: “Oh Hugh... bert, Hugh-bert. That’s for you.”

After sharing the video, Barrymore was inundated with comments from friends and fan branding her response “iconic” while others said they thought Grant’s remarks were “hilarious”.

Her video comes after the British star was asked whether he performed his own singing in the rom com, in which Grant plays a washed up 80s pop star who teams with Barrymore’s character to write a catchy pop song, Way Back into Love, for a rising star.

Grant told Wired: “Yes, well I do, but I’m auto-tuned beyond belief.

“Actually, that’s not true, I’m auto-tuned a bit, but not as much as some. Drew Barrymore was in that film with me and I don’t think she’d mind me saying her singing is just horrendous.”

Sitting alongside his co-stars Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez, Grant said with a chuckle: “I’ve heard dogs bark better than she sings.

“But having said that, once they tuned her up, she sounded way better than me because she’s got heart and voice and rock ‘n’ roll whereas I sounded like Julie Andrews and I’m meant to be rock ‘n’ roll.”
