Dream Coach Takes to Twitter to Tell First-Round Pick to Answer Phone

Former Stanford star Haley Jones made her long-anticipated transition to the next level on Monday after being selected No. 6 by the Dream in the 2023 WNBA draft. But, in the middle of her big night, Jones received a hilarious shout-out on Twitter from one pretty important person she apparently left on read: her new coach.

On a night when Jones was likely bombarded by calls and messages, Dream coach Tanisha Wright took to social media to ask her new rookie to pick up her phone so she could congratulate and welcome her to the team. Clearly, Wright, who’s entering her second season in Atlanta, had a little trouble getting through to Jones as evidenced by her not-so-subtle hashtag.

“Hey Girl!! Just trying to reach ya to congratulate ya on coming to the A! #PickUpYourPhone @haleyjoness19,“ Wright wrote.

Fortunately for the second-year coach, Jones did not go through the night without finding out Wright unsuccessfully attempted to reach her. During her media availability, Jones embarrassingly covered her face and laughed after learning of her coach’s tweet before apologizing to Wright for missing the call after leaving her phone at the table.

“Well, coach, if you’re listening, or you’re gonna see this interview, I’m so sorry, I literally got called, didn’t even think to grab my phone. … So, when I get to my phone, I’ll call her back immediately. That is, like, the worst first impression to have, missing a call from your new boss,” Jones joked.

While Jones appeared to be more than shocked by her coach’s tweet, Wright likely understands her circumstances considering she played 14 seasons in the WNBA before retiring in 2019. Of course, in the event that isn’t the case, all will likely be forgiven once Wright and the three-time All-American get better acquainted in the A this summer.
