Huge Hercules military plane swoops over Scots town as locals left shocked

A Scot captured stunning footage of a huge military aircraft swooping low over a seaside town.

Eagle eyed Leah had her eyes on the skies to film the dramatic video of the plane - believed to be a Hercules military aircraft - flying over Helensburgh in Argyll and Bute.

More often seen over Afghanistan or Iraq, the plane was easily spotted on Friday, January 22, because the skies are quiet due to the coronavirus lockdown.

The mobile phone footage shows the aircraft sweeping a few hundred feet over the town before heading inland.

Leah, who posted the video on social media, said: “I was out for a walk and heard the plane coming. It was so low and zoomed over Morrisons and Hermitage Academy after coming from the direction of Greenock.

“It was an impressive sight. Faslane isn’t far from here so you sometimes see military vehicles or whatever, but I have never seen a plane like that and never seen anything flying so low.

“You definitely don’t see that every day.”

The RAF Hercules C-130 is highly flexible with the ability to airdrop a variety of stores and airborne troops and can operate from natural surface landing zones.
