Veterinarians and staff at a Thai national park have pulled off a dramatic rescue after a baby elephant and then its mother fell in a storm drain.
The rescue at central Thailand's Khao Yai National Park involved the use of a boom lift and a digger and the resuscitation of the unconscious mother elephant by three people.
The rescue began in the pouring rain in central Nakhon Nayok province on Wednesday after a one-year-old elephant fell into the roadside drainage hole.
The distressed mother, which had been standing guard over her calf, also fell in after she was sedated, according to national park staff.
Rescuers used a truck-mounted boom lift to pull the mother out before climbing on top of her to perform cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Meanwhile, a digger cleared away earth so the anxious calf could climb out from the slippery hole.
The calf began suckling its mother, which soon regained consciousness, and both were able to return to the wild.
