Dramatic police chase comes to sudden end as car smashes into tree

This is the wreckage left behind after a dramatic police chase was brought to a sudden halt - by a tree. Greater Manchester Police says the pursuit began after the driver of a grey Vauxhall Astra failed to stop for officers in Middleton.

Officers followed the car through Middleton and into Alkrington Garden Village, but the driver continued in his attempts to escape the police. The high-speed chase was brought to a dramatic end though, as the driver ploughed the Vauxhall into a tree.

An image from the scene shared by GMP today (July 16) shows the front of the Astra severely damaged from the collision, although the rest of the vehicle appears to be relatively unscathed. The tree also appears to have been unmoved by the collision.

Police say that following the smash, police arrested the driver on suspicion of a number of offences, including driving whilst disqualified. The image was shared on Twitter by GMP Traffic this morning.

In a post alongside it, a spokesperson for GMP Traffic wrote: "This Astra failed to stop for patrols and was pursued through Middleton into Alkrington Garden Village. Luckily a passing tree brought the car to a safe stop and driver arrested for a number of offences including disqualified driving."

In a later tweet, GMP traffic's spokesperson joked: "That’ll be an interesting conversation with his insurance company. Oh, hang on."
