Dramatic moment woman rescued from trapped car as flood warnings issued across UK

Brits should be on the lookout with flooding expected in three places and possible in dozens more, as one person staged a dramatic rescue of a woman caught in a downpour.

Following the hottest spell of the year, much of the country has subsequently been battered by storms and heavy rain.

This has led to yellow weather warnings being issued by the Met Office as well as cautions of possible and even likely flooding.

Three flood warnings remain in place this morning, covering Hunsworth Beck at Oakenshaw, Pimlico Brook at Clitheroe, and the River Cole at Coleshill.

But parts of Sheffield and Rotherham were hit by flash floods that left one car stranded in deep, dangerous waters underneath a bridge.

Harrowing footage shows the car, deep underwater with water up to and over the windows, yesterday evening.

Bystanders watched on in horror as rain continues to pour down but one brave gentleman waded out into the water to help the woman trapped inside.

In the video, he can be seen braving the conditions before reappearing around the car, helping get the woman to safety.

This comes as flooding also hit a hospital and its A&E department, threatening ambulance arrivals.

Rotherham Hospital was hit by flooding that was said to have led to some ambulances being diverted as it caused disruption.

A spokesperson for The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust said: “The waiting room for our Urgent and Emergency Care Centre experienced some flooding as a result of yesterday’s storm which resulted in us temporarily relocating the waiting area.

"We remained open and operational throughout, and had reopened the usual waiting room by 10pm. We thank our Estates and Domestic teams for acting quickly to clear up the flooding, and to our colleagues in UECC for continuing to care for patients.”

For the areas hit with flood warnings, flooding is said to be expected so locals need to take the necessary precautions to keep themselves and loved ones safe and dry.

But alongside that, there are over 40 flood alerts across England and Scotland - this is where flooding is possible.

Most of Scotland is covered by flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible, with just Caithness and Suntherland, East Ross and Great Glen and Wester Ross not covered.

In England, the flood alerts are centred around Birmingham, and the north west.

They’re concentrated along a strip from Liverpool, northeast to Manchester and all the way up to Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield.

However, last 24 hours have seen 13 flood warnings removed, bringing some hope that the worst might be behind for some.

Northern England and parts of southern Scotland had yellow rain warnings throughout last night to midnight.

They warned of up to 60mm of rain in places across Sunday night as slow moving rain clouds swept across the northern parts of the UK, rushing in from the east.

But this morning, much of this rain has remained in place across Scotland, and is clearing to the northwest slowly.

Even as it begins to ease, the Met Office cautioned people to take care if travelling.
