Dramatic images show a wildfire engulf the Scottish Highlands during the hottest day of the year.

Firefighters raced to the scene at Beannachd Road in the Dornoch area of Sutherland at around 3.18pm on Saturday, March 19.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) dispatched six appliances with two hose reel jets, pewters and knapsacks to the scene.

Crews from Dornoch, Tain, Invergordon Golspie, Lairg, Helmsdale and Cromarty worked for hours to extinguish the blaze.

The fire was put out just after 6pm.

Invergordon Fire Station praised all the firefighters, tweeting : "Good effort to extinguish before darkness fell."

An SFRS spokesperson said: “We were called to reports of a wildfire at Beannachd Road, Dornoch at 15.18 on Saturday, March 19.

“Six appliances were in attendance along with two hose reel jets, pewters and knapsacks.

“We were given a stop at 18.17."
