Greater Manchester Police says it was called out to the scene at 4.18pm.
The Manchester Evening News understands the fire broke out in the roof of a changing room facility close to the playing fields on Laithwaite Park.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service added: "At approximately 4.15pm on Monday, February 21, firefighters were called to reports of a building fire on Scot Lane, in Wigan.
“Two fire engines from Wigan station quickly attended the scene.
"The fire involves the roof of a single storey outbuilding which was well alight when fire crews arrived at the scene.
"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using jets to extinguish the fire."
Scot Lane was closed off before 5pm, between Wood Street and Laithwaite Road.
Bus services were diverted away from Scot Lane, while one service had been stranded on the road as crews worked to tackle the fire.
The cordon was then shortened soon after, to within Laurel Street and St Mark's Avenue, before the road fully reopened at around 6pm.
