Dragons' Den Star Sheds Three Dress Sizes After Ditching Just One Food

Sara Davies, the 40-year-old Dragons’ Den star, has shared how cutting out sugar from her diet played a pivotal role in her significant weight loss. Once a size 16-18, Sara was given a stark warning by her doctors after developing gestational diabetes during both of her pregnancies. They told her she needed to lose weight to avoid developing type 2 diabetes, which became the wake-up call she needed to take control of her health.

In an interview with Bella Magazine, Sara explained that she had made vital changes to both her routine and diet to shed the pounds. When asked if she had cut sugar out of her diet, Sara confirmed, “Yes, and I lost quite a bit of weight.”

However, she went on to clarify that while she had lost weight initially, she hadn’t seen recent changes on the scales. “But actually, I haven’t lost anything recently. I’ve been going running a lot and even doing a little bit of weight training. So, I’m a lot fitter but the muscle weighs more than the fat,” she added, according to the Surrey Live.

In addition to cutting sugar, Sara adopted an active lifestyle, which included regular running and following some of the late Michael Mosley’s diet plans. These plans, which feature fasting and calorie counting, have contributed to Sara’s success in getting down to a healthier size 12. She mentioned that some of Mosley’s plans also focus on “reversing type 2 diabetes,” an idea that resonated with her given her personal health history.

Despite her strict focus on cutting sugar, Sara admits to allowing herself occasional treats. She said, “I do allow myself a little bit of indulgence, but it’s all about finding a balance.” The NHS recommends a daily sugar intake of no more than 30 grams or approximately five rounded teaspoons, and Sara’s diet follows this advice as much as possible.

The dangers of excess sugar consumption are well-documented. According to Spire Healthcare, consuming too much sugar can increase the risk of developing heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Additionally, sugary foods can contribute to weight gain, as they tend to have a high glycaemic index, meaning they are quickly digested and can leave people feeling hungry again soon after eating. This may lead to overeating or eating larger portions, which can further contribute to weight gain.

In contrast, foods with low sugar content and a low glycemic index are better for maintaining a healthy weight. Sara’s journey demonstrates how making small but significant changes to her lifestyle and diet has led to lasting improvements in her health. With her newfound fitness and a size 12 figure, Sara is proof that cutting out sugar can make a noticeable difference.
