Dr Hilary urges millions to get flu and covid jabs amid fears of winter ‘twindemic’

Dr Hilary has issued a warning to people over fears of a 'twindemic' this winter.

Appearing on ITV's Lorraine, the health expert warned that millions are eligible for their flu and covid jabs - and should get them urgently. He explained that there is risk of a "potential simultaneous onslaught of resurgence of covid and flu."

He said that the reason for it is because we have all been wearing masks, in lockdown and "hiding away". Therefore our immunity against viruses that cause the flu have also diminished.

The doctor added: "It makes sense to get your vaccinations without delay. And when I say vaccination, I mean 33 million people are eligible for a free flu jab and 26 million are eligible for a free covid booster.

"Remember that the flu jab is not a live virus - it can not give you the flu, which is a common myth which is still about. The covid booster, we're seeing a resurgence and there might be other variants so it makes sense to boost your immunity because no one wants that.

"What we really don't want is this 'twindemic' because the NHS is already on its knees. And if we saw a 'twindemic' it would really paralyse the National Health Service."

Lorraine asked if there was anything we could do "for ourselves" to help boost our immune systems. Dr Hilary said that getting enough sleep and reducing stress in your life are important factors to having a healthier lifestyle. He added that supplements such as vitamin A and vitamin D are useful to boost immunity too.
