The nation’s best-known GP, Dr Hilary Jones has issued a stark health warning to the world’s most famous gift-giver – Santa Claus. With his busiest day of the year around the corner, some could say the bearded one’s lifestyle is not the healthiest - especially during the festive season.
Luckily, Dr Hilary was on call to give his expert advice and much-needed wellness tips at a special pre-Christmas Day elf check-up hosted by private healthcare clinic Pall Mall Medical. It’s estimated that for one day only, the jolly chap chomps his way through 2.3 billion mince pies and guzzles 138,389,578 litres of sherry – the same as 55 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
That amounts to a chimney-busting 530 billion calories and 2.5billion units of alcohol – 181 million times over the recommended weekly intake. Factoring in his 24-hour marathon shift, Santa also poses a danger to the skies because lack of sleep can reduce reaction times by 15.4 percent.
Concerned Dr Hilary said the statistics show Father C is in dire need of an elf MOT and should make sure he puts himself first this Christmas amidst his generosity.
“When you digest the figures, it’s a miracle Santa is still going strong ,” said Dr Hilary. “A lifestyle like his could lead to chronic fatigue at best – diabetes or heart disease at worst.
“We all love a mince pie or three during the festive season, but without sounding too much like a nutcracker he is going way Ho Ho Ho-verboard! Of course, Christmas is a time to indulge, but it is still smart to limit food and drink on the naughty list.
“Hopefully, Santa will take note and adopt an elfier lifestyle this year, so he doesn’t become a ghost of Christmas future next year.”
Dr Chun Tang Medical Director of Pall Mall, added: “There is nothing more important than health and prevention is better than cure. A private health screen can detect issues before they become a serious medical concern.”
