Good Morning Britain today discussed a new science that suggests drinking a beer day could keep the doctor away.
Kate Garraway and Adil Ray asked Dr Hilary Jones about a study recommending a beer every day to improve gut health. Scientists claim it could even fend off serious illnesses, reports Kent Live.
Dr Hilary said: "This is a study by Nova University Lisbon in Portugal and it said a bottle of beer 330 mil bottle of beer every day could boost your gut microbiota, the diversity of the bugs in your healthy bugs in your gut. And they extrapolate their findings to say that that could reduce chronic disease obesity, diabetes.
"However it doesn't have to be alcoholic beer. The trial was conducted on 19 men over a month. Firstly, it doesn't mean that drinking more is better. And two, they want to confirm their findings by enlarging the study. And I don't think there'll be any shortage of volunteers I think, possibly."
Lead author of the study Professor Ana Faria said: "Results from this study show that drinking beer increases gut bacterial diversity without significantly changing body weight. Lower bacterial diversity has been associated with diabetes and heart disease.”
The men in the study were aged between 23 and 58, were regular drinkers and had no serious health issues. Experts said other research has proved 0% lager can be good for you but not alcoholic beer.
