Dr Hilary explains how Paul McCartney looks 'age-proof' at 80

Beatles legend Paul McCartney wowed the nation as the oldest ever performer at Glastonbury over the weekend.

The 80-year-old took to the Pyramid Stage during the five-day festival to perform a catalogue of his timeless hits including Let It Be, Hey Jude and Live and Let Die. As part of the encore, through special technology which could isolate Lennon's vocals from old recordings, Sir Paul was able to duet The Beatles' track I've Got A Feeling alongside his former bandmate.

Despite his age, Paul provided an energetic set which lasted for around three hours. A crowd of more than 100,000 people gathered at the festival’s famous Pyramid stage to watch him while almost 4 million people tuned in to watch from home.

While he wowed the crowds, some may have been wondering how he still has the stamina and energy to withhold such a huge show. Dr Hilary appeared on ITV's Lorraine today as he explained how the singer is "age-proof" at 80.

The doctor used other stars as examples of how to stay fit at an older age. He said: "Mick Jagger does an exercise routine six days a week. Apparently he runs and does dance for balance and agility. He also cycles and does a bit of gym work as well."

Lorraine said: "Same as Paul McCartney isn't it. He does a lot of yoga so we're told."

Dr Hilary said: "Yes he does. He is a vegetarian and he does a famous handstand which he has been doing and impressing people for a long time.

"He says that flexibility is much more important than strength at his age and he is absolutely right. It's difficult to build muscle but it's important to have muscle strength but your joints are probably much more important and need protection. Flexibility through Pilates and yoga is really important."

The ITV doctor said that being "age-proof" is more than just living a healthy lifestyle. He said: "It's not just about living a healthy lifestyle with healthy food and exercise, it's about being optimistic and being happy. Avoiding too much stress and keeping things in perspective. Being curious and always reinventing yourself and your interests is really really important."
