Dozens of travellers topple into the ocean after major bridge collapses in Bali

This is the moment 35 travellers were dashed into the ocean after a bridge collapsed in Bali.

Footage shows a group of tourists clambering back onto the broken bridge at a port in Nusa Penida, on the Indonesian island yesterday.

Thankfully, there were no casualties as a result of the incident at the Banjar Nyuh Seaport, which took place at about 4.45pm.

Agus Widiono, a spokesman for the local police department, said the travellers were queuing to board a tongkang - which is a 19th Century wooden boat that was used to carry goods across Southeast Asia.

But the bridge connecting the dock to the speedboats collapsed because there were too many people on it, reports Coconuts.co.

At least 35 tourists then tumbled into the sea, with some of them sustaining minor injuries, Widiono adds.

Many of them were left panicked but managed to save themselves.

In the video, locals tried to save the victims by throwing floats towards them.

Klunglung official Nyoman Suwirta said he's called on port authorities to prevent the overloading of bridges to stop the same thing happening again.

He added that the port was in the process of being restructured by the Ministry of Transport and that the bridge, which connected the pier to the pontoon, was newly built.

Suwirta added that officials should "prioritise safety" otherwise it could risk "affect[ing] the image of tourism" in the region.

It comes after a woman died when she fell overboard on a cruise ship as her body was recovered in the sea.

The 36-year-old passenger, who has not been identified, was returning to Florida from the Bahamas on Thursday when she tragically plunged overboard on the MSC Meraviglia cruise ship, according to authorities.

Her body was recovered by the US Coast Guard on Thursday morning about 18 miles from Port Canaveral, Florida.

The cruise ship was returning to Florida from Ocean Cay in the Bahamas when the tragic incident occurred.

Authorities quickly launched the Coast Guard by boat and helicopter but the passenger's injuries were fatal.

Field Sutton, director of communications at MSC Cruises, said in a statement: “Unfortunately, despite the rapid rescue operation, the passenger sustained fatal injuries. We are offering our full support to authorities as they investigate this matter.”
