Dozens of Palestinian men arrested by Israeli military near Gaza

More than two dozen Palestinian men arrested near Israel-Gaza border.

A disturbing video has surfaced recently, showing over two dozen blindfolded and barefoot Palestinian men with their hands tied behind their backs at the Israel-Gaza border. Israeli soldiers can be seen standing guard while the men sit or kneel on the wet and cold ground. The Israeli military has stated that these individuals were arrested in Gaza on suspicion of terrorist activity and were subsequently transferred to Israel for further investigation.

Shot near the border between Southern Israel and Gaza, the video depicts the men wearing disposable white coveralls in chilly weather conditions. With temperatures around 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) and rainy conditions, the detainees appear physically exhausted. Some of them can be seen swaying and seemingly struggling to stay awake. One man was even lying on the ground before a soldier came to wake him and help him up.

The Israeli military asserts that the individuals in the video are suspected of involvement in terrorism. The military's official statement claims that those suspected of terrorist activity are transported to Israel for interrogation, while those found not to be involved are released back into Gaza as soon as possible. The military explains that the detainees were wearing white coveralls because they had been strip-searched to ensure they did not possess any weapons or explosives. Additionally, the military claims that the detainees were about to be transferred to a detention facility where they would be provided with suitable clothing.

It is worth noting that while this video provides direct documentation of the detention of these Palestinian men from Gaza, previous footage has circulated showing similar detainment incidents. In some cases, individuals who were initially believed to be involved in terrorism were later identified as civilians by their relatives or friends. In December, we interviewed ten Palestinian men and boys who were detained by the Israeli military for five days before being released without any charges. These individuals bore witness to swollen wrists and bruises resulting from having their hands bound behind their backs for an extended period.

The Israeli military maintains that it adheres to international law regarding the treatment of detainees. It is unclear how long these men were left exposed to the cold weather as an Israeli soldier requested that the filming cease and the premises be vacated. This video comes amidst ongoing scrutiny over the Israeli military's treatment of detained Palestinians in Gaza, with allegations of mistreatment and arbitrary arrests being raised. The release of this footage highlights the need for a thorough examination of these practices to ensure adherence to international human rights standards.
