Dozens of North Ayrshire playparks set for upgrades in six-figure makeover

Dozens of playparks across North Ayrshire are set for be transformed as part of a six-figure makeover.

Work will begin on an initial 29 parks the length and breadth of the region this month thanks to a £500,000 investment from North Ayrshire Council and top-up funding from the Scottish Government.

Contractors Hawthorn Heights, who specialise in the bespoke design and installation of play parks, will carry out phase one of improvements.

The project will kick-off at Stevenston Shore before moving to Brodick Shore, Lamlash, Whiting Bay and Kildonan Steps, all in Arran.

Work will then move on to mainland parks, beginning with Beith. It is anticipated that the final playpark in phase one – Moor Park in Irvine – will be complete by the end of September, although this is subject to change.

Work on the next set of play parks is expected to take place some time next year.

Councillor Tony Gurney, Cabinet Member for Place, said: “We are delighted to confirm that works are underway and it is expected that by the end of year the first phase of works will be finished – and the playparks will be transformed.

“We recognise just how important open spaces are and play parks are a consistent source of fun for young people and their families.

“Consultation took place with our communities and we hope that the new equipment and the changes that are made reflect that.”

The local authority's Streetscene team are also looking to put in place new bins and benches.

This will include 51 larger capacity bins that are rodent and seagull proof, 115 new benches and 41 accessible picnic benches.
