Dozens of food banks across Scotland set to close on Monday for Queen's funeral

Dozens of food banks across Scotland are expected to close their doors on Monday while the Queen's funeral takes place.

The Trussell Trust - which oversees 45 operators and 118 centres distributing groceries - confirmed some food banks could close.

The Queen's burial at Westminster Abbey will be the first state funeral to take place in the UK since the death of Winston Churchill in 1965.

Countless businesses across the country are expected to close for the day - despite no legal requirement for them to do so - and many public services will be reduced. At least 17 operators - responsible for running 48 food banks - are expected not to open on the day of the funeral, according to figures obtained by Third Force News (TFN).

But the Trussell Trust stressed that any food bank closures in Scotland would be the decision of the independent operators.

Emma Revie, chief executive of the Trussell Trust, said: "Food banks in our network run sessions on different days and at different times.

“Food banks are best placed to make the right decision for their communities and will ensure everyone who needs support can access it as they do with every bank holiday.

"As each food bank is an independent charity, we’d encourage people who need support to contact their local food bank to check their opening hours."

Blythswood Care, a Christian charity that runs 11 food banks across Scotland, is among the operators to be closing on Monday.

In a Facebook post, the charity said: "Monday, September 19, the date of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral, will be a national bank holiday.

"Blythswood Care will close on this day. We want to allow our staff the opportunity to pay their respects to Her Majesty and commemorate her reign, while marking the final day of the period of national mourning. We shall also be pausing all social media activity until after the State Funeral."

Blythswood Care insisted "no one should miss out" as a result of the closure on Monday.

The charity added: "Referring agents who dispense foodbank vouchers are being advised that we are closed on Monday. Some key agents do hold emergency food boxes. Our foodbanks will be open on Tuesday."

Green MSP Maggie Chapman told TFN: "These reports are concerning, particularly in a cost-of-living crisis. I’m urgently seeking more information on the situation to see what assistance can be offered to anyone impacted."

The majority of food banks in Scotland are expected to continue as normal.

Volunteers at Glasgow North West Foodbank said: "People going without food does not stop. All of our foodbanks will be open at the normal times."
