Downpatrick graveyard vandalism sees flowers scattered and sentimental items broken

Police have appealed for witnesses and information after reports of criminal damage at a cemetery in Co Down.

Struell Cemetery in Downpatrick was victim to vandalism, which left flowers from graves scattered and sentimental ornaments broken.

The damage has sparked outrage and feelings of hurt from families with loved ones buried in the plot.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police received a report of criminal damage at Struell Cemetery, Old Course Road, Downpatrick at approximately 1.50pm on Saturday March 19th.

"Damage had been caused to a glass vase and flowers laid had been strewn. An ornament of a holy cross was also broken.

"Enquiries are continuing and police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them on 101 quoting reference number 1106 19/03/22."

In other news, police are appealing for witnesses following a serious assault in Newcastle on St Patrick's Day.

At approximately 11:15pm, officers received a report that a male had been assaulted in the Main Street area of the town, receiving a number of lacerations to his chest and cuts/bruising to his face.

Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have dash-cam footage or any other information that could assist with enquiries, is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number of 2122 of 17/03/22.
