Downpatrick community to hold charity event in memory of local toddler

The community of Downpatrick is continuing to support the parents of a toddler who died just days after being sent home from A&E.

Jaiden Milligan, three, died in hospital on July 17 2022, after attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Three days before the child's death, his parents Charlotte and Caylan took him to the Ulster Hospital A&E after noticing he was unwell.

They say he was sent home after a five minute assessment and given a probable diagnosis of a sinus infection. Preliminary results after his death showed he had multiple problems with his heart.

Next month, a fundraising event, dedicated to little Jaiden, will see hopeful singers compete in a charity version of The Voice. It will take place on April 14, in Fitzpatrick's Bar, Downpatrick.

"It is going to be amazing," Caylan said.

"The charity, Helping Hand, is absolutely fantastic and the work it does means so much. We hope, as a family, that we can get lots of people invovled in the event, in our Jaiden's memory."

Helping Hand Charity was established by the medical staff at the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children in 1997. It has a single aim of helping the children in their care.

A spokesperson said: "By supporting Helping Hand, you will be helping to purchase vital new equipment to diagnose and treat the hospital’s young patients, to provide facilities and services for families and to fund research into children’s illnesses."

Caylan and Charlotte spoke to Belfast Live after Jaiden's death, and said they will always remember their baby boy, as a "happy, pleasant wee child."

"He was just such a good child," they added.

"It is never going to be the same without him. Our house will never be the same. He really was a mummy's boy, and a typical wee boy who would happily sit playing on his own for hours."

In a statement from the South Eastern Trust, a spokesperson said: "The loss of a child at any time is heart-breaking and we acknowledge the pain and heartache Jaiden’s parents, Caylan and Charlotte are currently experiencing. We would like to express our deepest condolences at this sad time.

"The Trust is aware of Jaiden’s case and will be investigating it fully. We will be in contact with Jaiden’s parents as soon as the outcome of the investigation is complete."
