Downpatrick collision claims the life of a teenage pedestrian

A teenage boy has died following a road traffic collision in Downpatrick.

The accident happened on the Flying Horse Road on Sunday 2 February at around 6.30pm.

SDLP Councillor for Downpatrick John Trainor sent his condolences to the family of the young pedestrian.

He told Belfast Live: "Sad news emerging from Downpatrick this evening, an unfortunate incident on our roads has resulted in the loss of life of a young person. This is terrible news for any parent to receive.

"My thoughts and prayers at this difficult time are with the family, friends and all those involved in this incident. If anyone has any information relating to this incident please contact the PSNI to help them conclude their investigations.”

A spokesperson for Northern Ireland Ambulance Service told Belfast Live that they received a 999 call at 6.39pm on Sunday evening.

He added: "NIAS received the call following reports of a road traffic collision involving a young pedestrian on the Flying Horse Road in Downpatrick.

"NIAS dispatched a rapid response paramedic and emergency crew. The HEMS team also attended by car.

"No one was taken from the scene."

Sinn Féin Councillor Oonagh Hanlon spoke to Belfast Live on Sunday evening.

She said that the Downpatrick community are "in shock".

"Tonight the Downpatrick community is in shock as a young teenager has lost his life as a result of a tragic accident. I offer my deepest condolences and as a mother my heart goes out to the young man's family and friends who will be struggling to come to terms with this terrible event.

"I have no doubt the Downpatrick community will be there to support the family at this sad time."

A PSNI spokesperson said: "A male pedestrian has died following a road traffic collision on the Flying Horse Road, Downpatrick last night (Sunday 2 February).

"Police received a report at around 6.35 pm on Sunday evening. The road was closed for a several hours and reopened at 1.30 am this morning (Monday, 3 February).

"Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Flying Horse Road and who witnessed the collision to contact officers in Downpatrick on 101 quoting reference 1509 02/02/20."
