The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene of a car on fire at around 4:15pm this afternoon and the blaze was extinguished within minutes.

A spokesperson for NIFRS told Belfast Live that one appliance of theirs was in attendance and that their personnel handed the scene over to police.

Police received a report of a car on fire in the Ballymote area of Downpatrick today at 4.15pm.

A spokesperson added that: "Enquiries continue. Anyone with information is asked to call 101 and quote serial 1273 of 18/04/2022."

In relation to last night's incident, a police spokesperson said they are appealing for information following a report of a burglary and theft of a vehicle in the Ballymote Walk area at around 11.15pm.

"The car was discovered a short time later on fire in the nearby Ballyhornan Road.

"Anyone who may have witnessed anyone suspicious in the area, have dash-cam footage or who may have any information that could help with enquiries, is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference 1809 of 17/04/22."
