Downing Street's arrogance in the face of Partygate shows why Boris must go

Even after their cover had been blown, the Downing Street revellers carried on rubbing the public’s nose in the dirt.

By cracking open the bubbly and blasting out the Beastie Boys, Downing Street officials have stuck up two fingers at those who suffered in lockdown and abided by the rules.

The sheer arrogance of their behaviour shows that this is a mob who know their time is up and are celebrating like they were in the last days of the Roman Empire.

Even after the shame heaped on them for breaking lockdown with two parties on the eve of Prince Philip’s funeral, even after dragging the reputation of the highest office in the land through the mud, let alone the tarnished character of its occupant, they feel they have not done enough damage.

The entitlement of this scandal-ridden rabble, led by a Prime Minister who thinks he cannot possibly be expected to follow the laws he sets for others, is nauseating.

We do not really need to wait for the Sue Gray report – the dogs in the street know what happened and what kind of tone Boris Johnson and his party-happy pals set for his staff.

There were wholesale parties in Downing Street which broke the rules Boris Johnson set for the rest of us.

The Prime Minister lied to cover it up, because that is what comes to him habitually.

He was caught out and acted out a humble apology.

But no one is fooled.

Johnson and the rotten culture he has fostered must be swept away to restore some trust in the office he has tarnished.

Scots are increasingly feeling the pinch when it comes to their shopping bill (Ross Turpie/Daily Record)

The Record’s snapshot today of supermarket price rises will resonate with most Scots.

The cost of living crisis is beginning to bite hard.

With energy prices soaring and inflation at its highest point in 30 years, the outlook is grim.

Struggling families will be hit hardest, with many already having to make the stark choice between heating their home or feeding themselves and their children.

Millions will need help to get through the coming months and will look to the Government to act.

Measures could be taken to ease the burden, including suspending the National Insurance increase and cutting VAT on fuels.

But the Tories are just sitting on their hands while the nation suffers.
