Downing Street parties may have caused Covid deaths

Your review of Partygate on Channel 4 (Partygate review – a giant, exploding grenade of a TV show, 3 October) began by stating: “Nobody died because the staff of 10 Downing Street threw office parties throughout the Covid lockdown.”

Surely, this is not correct. The purpose of lockdown rules was to limit the spread of the virus and thus reduce the mortality and morbidity caused by contracting it. Every time someone broke the rules, they increased the ability of the virus to spread.

I don’t know if the prevalence of Covid infections among Downing Street staff has been studied. However, their actions meant a higher chance of infection in the wider community, and therefore of death.
