Downing Street dog: Boris Johnson's new rescue puppy arrives at Number 10

Boris Johnson’s new puppy has been seen going into Downing Street for the first time this morning.

The adorable 15-week-old Jack Russell was pictured being let into the famous black doorway in a red travel case.

Mr Johnson's partner Carrie Symonds confirmed that the dog had been named Dilyn.

The pup was rescued after being abandoned due to a misaligned jaw, according to The Sunday Telegraph.

Mr Johnson and his partner Carrie Symonds have adopted the unnamed pooch after Downing Street staff roundly agreed to the idea of a new furry resident.

Current Downing Street pet Larry the cat was nowhere to be seen as his new housemate arrived.

The feline is a fan favourite and many eyes will be watching to see if the cat and puppy prove to be the latest stormy relationship on Downing Street.

If a disagreement were to occur between the two animals, it is not certain who would get priority.

While the new dog was adopted personally by Mr Johnson and Miss Symonds, Larry is a permanent resident at Number 10 and now on his third Prime Minister.

The rescued dog has been living with a cat in preparation for life with Larry, so there are hopes the pair can get along.

Eileen Jones, 66, rescued the Jack Russell puppy in Wales after getting an anonymous tip off that he was being abandoned.

The Prime Minister and his partner decided to get the rescued dog to highlight new anti puppy-farm legislation - known as Lucy’s Law.

Mr Johnson's official spokesman said: "The Prime Minister has always been a passionate supporter of animal welfare and has always believed that animals should always get the right start in life.

"That's why the Government has taken such significant action in this area, and that obviously includes introducing Lucy's Law."

Ms Jones did not give the leader of the Government any special treatment however, and visited the SW1 house to make sure it was suitable for the dog

She told The Sunday Telegraph: “He [the puppy] has been living with a cat for a few weeks and from my understanding there are a lot of things in place for training. He is only a baby so he is going to be very workable and he is a delightful little pup.

“I think he will settle in well although there may be more issues on the side of the cat, but as long as the puppy learns who is boss – which will be the cat – then everything will be fine.”
