Most sensible people were staggered at the Tory Government’s appalling mini-Budget, which sent the pound tumbling and the UK economy into a tailspin.
But one person’s praise stood out.
Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross was behind it all the way – and even urged First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to copy PM Liz Truss’ tax cuts for the super-rich. Truss yesterday ditched the plan to cut income tax for millionaires and Ross shamelessly followed suit.
Despite originally supporting the botched plan, Ross pivoted by saying abandoning the policy was the “right thing to do”. Little wonder Labour dismissed him as a flip-flopper.
It was the latest U-turn from a politician who can barely hold a position for five minutes without changing his mind.
He called for Boris Johnson to quit over Partygate then U-turned to avoid undermining the Scottish Tory conference.
Holyrood desperately needs serious opposition but is let down by a political lightweight who blows with the wind.
Tory MSPs are said to be questioning whether Ross is the right man for the job, with a view to toppling him next year.
The problem is that leading the Scottish Tories is a job from hell which no credible figure would ever want.
People across the UK need urgent help during the cost of living crisis yet the Tories are incapable of providing the solutions the country desperately needs.
There isn’t one leading Tory in Scotland, or the rest of the UK, that has a thought-out plan for getting through this crisis.
For that reason the party is, quite rightly, heading for electoral oblivion – and we hope Truss and her Scottish crony Ross are the first to go.
Do the right thing
One of Boris Johnson’s rare correct decisions came earlier when he pledged Universal Credit would rise in line with inflation from next April.
The decision on whether to boost benefits in the face of a cost of living crisis now lies with PM Liz Truss and
Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng.
So far, the dismal duo have failed to offer any confirmation on a Universal Credit rise or if claimants will face a
real-terms cut.
Campaigners say it would be a calamity for millions if benefits are cut but robbing the poor to pay the rich appears to be the Truss government’s mantra.
Giving poor families a helping hand not only benefits them, it also helps the wider economy.
These families won’t hoard the cash in offshore accounts or spend it on a new holiday cottage in France, they will use it to buy food for their children and spend it in local shops.
There’s still time for Truss to do the right thing and offer help to those who need it most – for a change.
