Douglas Luiz makes Arsenal and Liverpool transfer choice amid Aston Villa deadline day exit

Liverpool have reportedly failed in a bid to secure the signing of Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa, with the player preferring a move to join Arsenal on deadline day.

According to Sky Sports, Liverpool made a bid to make the Brazilian international a late addition to their squad but have been rebuffed as they player prefers a move to the Gunners. Jurgen Klopp had previously claimed that he was happy with his squad, but amid a recent injury crisis he took action with a move for a player whose contract expires next summer.

However, as has been reported throughout the day, the player has his heart set on a move to Arsenal but there is still some way to go in terms of sealing the defensive midfielder's signature. According to Fabrizio Romano, personal terms have been agreed for the 24-year-old but Villa are pushing for a higher fee for the player.

This morning, Arsenal are said to have had a £20million bid rejected for the star with a second bid of £23million plus add ons also having been rejected this afternoon. The Independent's Miguel Delaney even claims that Villa are asking for up to £40million to seal a deal for a player who scored the equaliser in his side's 2-1 defeat to the Gunners in the Premier League last night.

However, with personal terms already looking tied up, then it could go right to the wire, with Villa having lined up Wolves' Leander Dendoncker to replace a player who could leave for free next summer. Barring any late drama, Arsenal look to have a clear path to secure a player who would fill the hole in their squad left by injuries to Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny as long as they can agree a deal with Villa.
