Doug Pederson on Trevor Lawrence: ‘He can definitely do the job’

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence didn’t exactly bounce back from his five-turnover day against the Philadelphia Eagles. Instead of righting the ship against the Houston Texans, Lawrence threw two more interceptions and the Jaguars scored zero touchdowns in a 13-6 loss.

It was a frustrating and embarrassing result for a Jaguars offense that had 422 total yards Sunday, but not nearly enough points to show for it. After the game, Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said he still has full faith in Lawrence as the team’s offensive leader.

“I think that we as a staff have to figure out a way to kind of get him settled into the game, number one,” Pederson said. “Then, obviously, Trevor has to, obviously, make sure that he is in a good spot. The thing is he sees everything. He sees the field well. We just have to continue to keep throwing and keep putting him in situations like that.

“He is going to get better. He will get better. I’m not worried about that at all. We have a lot of faith and trust in him, and he can definitely do the job. We’ve seen it this season. We just have to keep working on him.”

Lawrence started the season with an up-and-down day against the Washington Commanders with one touchdown and a game-sealing interception late. Then the second-year quarterback threw five touchdowns with no interceptions over back-to-back wins against the Indianapolis Colts and Los Angeles Chargers.

Last week, Pederson told reporters that he thought the four-fumble, one-interception performance from Lawrence against the Eagles was “just a blip” and not a significant setback in his development. The Jaguars can’t afford too many more blips from Lawrence if they hope to stay in the postseason hunt.
