Double yellow lines installed at 'dangerous junction' near Nottinghamshire school

Concerned parents have called for new double yellow lines at a 'dangerous' junction to be enforced. The lines will be installed across a number of areas in Burton Joyce and are now in place outside the Burton Joyce Primary School, on Willow Wong at the junction with Mayfield Avenue.

Mike Adams, the Conservative Councillor for Trent Valley, said the restriction has been introduced outside the school to address people's concerns about traffic safety.

Nottinghamshire Live understands that the measures are in the process of being enforced at the location to allow people to get used to the new restrictions. The narrow street outside Burton Joyce Primary School has yellow zig zag lines on the left side, and now it also has the new double yellow lines on the right side of Willow Wong.

When Nottinghamshire Live visited the area on Tuesday morning, January 24, a parent was seen parking on the zig zag lines outside the school, while another one parked on the pavement on Mayfield Avenue. Cllr Adams said: "When I got elected, I promised that I will put more yellow lines. I asked people where they want them, because I think it is important to protect these junctions."

He said the road outside the school would get congested and the measure aims to "stop this from happening". He added: "A big part of it was to improve children's safety as well."

Zulf Amin dropped his grandchildren at the school and said: "To be honest, I have never parked at this junction. I think it is very dangerous if people park here.

"I think it has improved since they put the double yellow lines here. I think it is common sense that you cannot park on double yellow lines and zig zag lanes - but some people still do it."

The 67-year-old added: "Some people park on the pavement. It is hard for parents to walk their children to school when the pavement is blocked off."

However, Rachael Page said the new measure has just moved the issue of congestion further up the road on Willow Wong. The 39-year-old added: "The double yellow lines have just moved the problem up the road. It is not doing anything to stop it.

"The junction is not safe. They need to enforce it if they want to do something about it."

Natalie Knowles, another concerned parent, has commented: "I can see why these measures have been taken but it is just not effective." The 37-year-old said: "They need to enforce it."

Cllr Adams said that more yellow double lines will be installed on Shelford Crescent, Chestnut Grove and Farnsfield Avenue.
