Doting Edinburgh man's countless nights at Sick Kids as brother battled leukaemia

A man from Edinburgh is running the Edinburgh marathon for his brother who spent years in the Sick Kids with leukaemia - only getting the all clear last year.

Barry Hogg from Danderhall spent countless nights by his brother Sean Hogg's bed as he went through three years of gruelling chemotherapy to beat the disease.

Now the 25-year-old is raising money for the Edinburgh Sick Kids as he wants to give something back to the incredible staff who looked after the family throughout his younger brother's illness.

His brother Sean Hogg was diagnosed with leukaemia at 13-years-old and spent three years in the Sick Kids getting treatment and one year in remission.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live the big brother said: "I have been active all my life playing football and boxing but I have never done a marathon before so it will be a challenge.

"Since that time I have always wanted to give something back and now is the time. Sean was diagnosed at 13 and we spent three years in the Sick Kids.

"We have a big family that are really supportive. We have eight siblings in total so my parents would stay through the daytime and I would stay by his side at night while they went to look after the others.

"We were in hospital for three years constantly, I spent most nights there.

"The fourth year Sean spent in remission, he had a scare last year but thankfully got the all clear.

"We have had a lot of support already, we set £500 as the goal which was raised in the first 24 hours.

"Everything is going to the Sick Kids cancer wards, the hospital staff were amazing so I really want to be able to give them something back. "

The siblings now at 19 and 25.

On the fundraising page he wrote: " Decided to run the Edinburgh marathon with my good friend Ashley Moss on May 29 for the sick kids.

"This is going straight to the kids cancer department as they deserve it. The reason for my run is my younger brother Sean Hogg spent 4 years fighting leukaemia in this teen days.

"The department in the hospital is the the reason he’s still here today and it’s only about time I do my part to give back."

The fundraising page has raised £600 so far smashing its £500 target in just 24 hours you can donate to the gofundme here.
