An Edinburgh resident is spreading a little bit of extra holiday cheer this year on a quiet street in Portobello.
In honour of her late dad, Edinburgh resident Maria, 41, has “gone big” on a bright and joyous Christmas display.
“I’ve had some comments that it’s too early for Christmas, but most people love it,” Maria told Edinburgh Live.
Her Portobello garden is full of Christmas lights, and Santa Claus and snowman displays. The reindeer in particular hold a special significance.
“I just love Christmas - I have ever since I was a kid. My father and I used to do Christmas competitions every year. He always won,” Maria recalled fondly.

After her dad passed away, Maria decided to build her super-sized Christmas display in his honour. “This year I decided to go big for him,” she said.
Maria used some of her own decorations, a few new items and a few extra special decorations from her dad.
“The reindeer are his. I brought them from his house, and I’ve used them in my display this year. In my old neighbourhood, everyone knew me for my Christmas display. It’s my first proper Christmas at this house, and I’m buying even more for my display next year,” Maria said.
Maria said she and her father have always been “Christmas crazy.”
“It’s always been the best time of year for me. Christmas and lights always bring a lot of joy and happiness to people. It shouldn't just be about money and gifts. Christmas is really about celebration,” she said.
“I know a lot of people like to buy things for their kids, but it’s not really about that. My favourite thing about Christmas has always been Christmas dinner. Everyone is together and celebrating.”
Maria said she loves watching the school kids stop outside her house to admire the Christmas display, and she hopes it brings joy to everyone during the holiday season. Next year, she plans to bring the display back bigger and better than ever in her dad’s memory.
