Dortmund confirm Karim Adeyemi injury blow ahead of Chelsea Champions League clash

Borussia Dortmund have released an update on the availability of forward Karim Adeyemi after he went off injured in their Bundesliga clash against Hertha Berlin over the weekend. After scoring against Chelsea in the Champions League, Adeyemi bagged another goal over the weekend but saw his game end early through injury.

The 21-year-old scored the only goal of the game on Wednesday in Dortmund's round of 16 first leg meeting with the Blues, handing Graham Potter his first defeat in the Champions League. Chelsea were unable to bounce back from that result, losing in the Premier League to bottom side Southampton courtesy of a James Ward-Prowse free kick.

Two defeats in less than four days has seen pressure mount significantly on Potter, although Todd Boehly and Co. look set to continue backing him. A mass overhaul has been conducted by the American businessman since he completed a takeover of the club in May 2022 and Potter is seen as the man to lead Chelsea into their new era.

With a London derby to come against Tottenham at the weekend, Potter faces a decisive next few weeks at the Chelsea helm if he wishes to keep his job. In March, the Blues welcome relegation-threatened Leeds and Everton to Stamford Bridge with those two fixtures sandwiching an away trip to Leicester and the second leg of their last-16 Champions League tie with Dortmund.

Potter has an impressive European record in west London with two wins and one draw from the three group stage games he was in charge for. The Blues progressing into the quarter-finals would mean that win column needs another mark in it but Dortmund will be hoping to their torrid run against English teams on the elite stage although they will likely have to do it without Adeyemi.

On Monday, the German club confirmed that Adeyemi tore a muscle fibre and will be out for around three weeks. Dortmund travel to England to face Chelsea in 15 days, and thus Adeyemi is set to miss the clash. Edin Terzic still has a number of excellent players he can call upon, but no Adeyemi will be a significant blow.

Judging by how the first leg played out and Dortmund's advantage going into the second meeting, Chelsea will likely have the lion's share of possession. If the game does pan out like that, the pace of Adeyemi, on show for his goal at Signal Iduna Park, is a massive weapon that Dortmund will be unable to utilise on the counter attack.
