Doppio Malto Glasgow looks to bring live music and stand up to George Square

The CEO of Doppio Malto has said the Glasgow venue could be the ideal place for entertainment lovers to enjoy music and stand up comedy.

Giovanni Porcu heads up the craft beer and Italian restaurant brand globally and he believes the Scots venue has a lot of potential. The restaurant in George Square was the first to be opened in the UK back in August 2021.

The CEO has revealed that Glasgow nightlife lovers have a lot to look forward to as Doppio Malto continues to establish itself in the city.

He told Glasgow Live: "We need to work on the brand everyday. So if you ask me if the brand is ok I will tell you no, we have to continue working on the food, on the beer and on the experience. We need to continue connecting with our customers and continue to improve as soon as our customers ask us to change.

"I think we need to start organising events inside the place because we are keen on organising live music and stand up.

"However, we are a box and can offer you a lot of things. We can give you great Italian craft beer, good food or the great experience.

"After the start up phase we need to focus on what the brand can be inside that box."

Doppio Malto was immediately met with their first hurdle when they launched the Glasgow restaurant and bar during the height of covid.

Now they are fully focussed on ensuring that the venue brings life to George Square. The CEO said: "We opened in the middle of the pandemic and the first year was very, very tough.

"There were the restrictions and people were worried. But it was equally tough in Scotland, Italy and France so we were quite used to it.

"I think now that the situation is ok we can continue going forward."

Taking on the Glasgow market is a challenge for any newcomer trying to make a name, however, Giovanni Porcu believes that the people of Italy and Glaswegians have very similar expectations when it comes to a night out.

He explained: "I think customers in Glasgow are very different from customers in London.

"Glaswegians are similar to customers in Italy. I think they are both likely to look for experiences and fun.

"It isn't just about the catering it's about the experience. Glaswegians want to feel good and happy."

Doppio Malto is recognised throughout Italy for its beer, which can only be purchased in the venue, and they are now hoping to continue that success in Scotland.

Currently they are hopeful of having the name Doppio Malto on supermarket shelves throughout their homeland and if they are successful their beers could eventually be seen in stores across Scotland.

Giovanni said: "We're working on it right now and starting in Italy.

"The supermarket scene is very, very challenging and tough especially in this time with high inflation.

"Supermarkets are really hard to break into at the moment. In Italy we have opened a couple of lines in a chain.

"We are awaiting to see what the sales are like before we think about the Scottish or UK market. At this moment we are not ready."
