Eddie Howe has revealed he will hold talks with Martin Dubravka during the World Cup break over his future - after the goalkeeper edges towards the first half of his Manchester United loan spell without playing a single game.
The idea when Newcastle loaned Dubravka out to the Red Devils was for the Slovakia international to play in the Europa League and the League Cup. But should he get through next week's tie without involvement in the cup game against Aston Villa, serious questions of his loan will be asked.
Newcastle inserted a recall option into Dubravka's loan in the summer and Howe says the door isn't closed on the ex-Sparta Prague man. A decision on Dubravka will determine whether Newcastle extend Loris Karius' stay with Karl Darlow now back in training.
When asked about Dubravka, Howe told Chronicle Live: "I think he is an outstanding goalkeeper. I really do and I will have a chat with Martin as time progresses.
"I won't speak now as he is in the middle of a busy period as we are. There will be a time when I will sit down with him and have a chat and see what he wants to do next."
Howe was mystified by Dubravka's non-selection at Man United with 10 unused sub appearances so far. When asked about his lack of game-time, Howe added: "It's difficult for me to comment. I don't know what goes on at any other football club.
"All I will say is I love Martin as a lad, he did brilliantly for us last year. And he is an outstanding goalkeeper and I will have a chat with him at the right time."
And Howe did not rule out the possibility of Dubravka returning to St James' Park. Man United do have a purchase clause for Dubravka at the end of the season but Newcastle can call him back before then.
Howe said: "Of course yeah the door is still open. A lot depends on what Martin wants. We will take it from there."
Dubravka still has a contract with Newcastle until 2025. Going forward, especially if Newcastle did qualify for Europe, he could still prove a valuable asset in squad rotation.
