Donny van de Beek injury ‘not looking good’ says Erik ten Hag after Manchester United midfielder left in tears

Erik ten Hag has admitted his concern over the injury sustained by Donny van de Beek during Tuesday’s 3-0 Premier League win over Bournemouth.

The Dutch midfielder was handed a rare start in United’s first outing of 2023 at Old Trafford, impressing early on with some key contributions in both attack and defence.

However, Van de Beek’s evening was ended prematurely shortly before half-time when he suffered a nasty-looking injury and was replaced by youngster Alejandro Garnacho.

The 25-year-old’s leg bent horribly and he appeared to suffer a bad knee problem after Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi accidentally slipped into a heavy challenge on the wet surface.

Van de Beek was seen in tears as he limped off slowly and made his way down the tunnel before the interval.

Asked for an update after the game, United boss Ten Hag admitted the injury did not look good but insisted they would have to wait to make an accurate diagnosis.

Admitting his “concern”, he said: “We need to wait 24 hours. But it is not looking very good.”

Ten Hag had already confirmed ahead of the win over Bournemouth that Brazilian winger Antony had also picked up an unspecified injury after missing out on the matchday squad altogether, with no further update given on the details or severity.

United did, however, welcome back Diogo Dalot and Scott McTominay on Tuesday night after injury and illness respectively.
