Donald Trump takes swipe at Nicola Sturgeon during visit to Scotland

DONALD Trump has taken a swipe at Nicola Sturgeon insisting the former first minister was "not very helpful" for Scotland.

The 76-year-old was visiting his Turnberry golf resort during a whistle-stop tour of Scotland having arrived in South Ayrshire on Tuesday.

He visited his Menie Estate golf course near Aberdeen on Monday on his first visit to the UK since 2019.

Asked about Sturgeon and the current probe into SNP finances, Trump said: “She has not been very helpful to Scotland, I think. I don’t think she’s been a great person for Scotland and it’s too bad to hear what’s happening with her.

“But you want people that love their country and love the country. This is a very special country so it’s too bad what’s happening to her.”

The former president previously labelled Sturgeon a “failed woke extremist” following her resignation as first minister.

No travel conditions were placed on Trump after he pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records in New York last month.

Trump added: “We had a great time at Turnberry. There’s no place like it. We really had a wonderful time and we love Scotland.

“I love it. I love Scotland. It’s the home of my mother. I love Scotland. She did too.”

Trump’s mother was born in Lewis in the Western Isles before emigrating to the US.

It is expected that Trump will travel to his golf course at Doonbeg, Co Clare, on Ireland’s west coast later on Wednesday.

He is running for the White House again in 2024 as Joe Biden, who beat him at the previous election, also recently confirmed he would run again.

Trump previously sparked a security operation during a visit to Scotland in 2018 as his arrival was met with protests in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen.
